Conference Title: "Vert-de-gris: When the Current No Longer Flows" Energy Transition Challenged by Social Acceptability

Context of the Conference:

  • The current Quebec energy demand is met by 47% local and renewable sources (hydraulic, wind, and biomass energy) and 53% imported hydrocarbons.
  • According to Hydro-Québec, an additional 150 to 200 terawatt-hours of electricity will need to be produced by 2035, almost doubling the current total production.
  • The anticipated increase in energy needs requires significant infrastructure investments.
  • There is growing opposition to major energy consumption and production projects: social acceptability is on everyone's lips.

Conference Description: This dynamic and applied conference will be:

  • Participatory, drawing on participants' experiences and understanding of the issues.
  • Based on case studies, scientific expertise, and concrete professional experiences.

Learning Targets: This conference will enable you to:

  • Strengthen your knowledge, enhance your arguments, and improve your intervention skills in matters of social acceptability.
  • Develop a common understanding of the factors contributing to crises or social tensions.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this workshop, you will be well-equipped to:

  1. Define and understand "social risk" and social acceptability.
  2. Recognize 12 of the main triggers generating public anger.
  3. Develop a credible and nuanced argument on social acceptability and energy transition.

The conference will last approximately 40 minutes, with content shared via a PowerPoint presentation.

Expert Name and Biography: Cédric Bourgeois, co-founder and partner of Transfert Environnement et Société. Cédric has developed extensive expertise in managing and engaging angry publics, facilitating information and consultation sessions, and achieving social acceptability for major projects. For over 15 years, Cédric has advised management teams and project teams on managing their social risks.
